Description

VICTORIA 5 June 1856 - Double-rate letter (1/2-1 ounce) from Melbourne to Milan, 1 s (Yv. 7) lightly short on the left, only to the U.K. then considered unpaid. The letter was carried by the clipper Joseph Tarrat of the Black Ball line from Port Philip, via Cape Horn, to England. In London the red boxed handstamp "COLONIES/ART-18" was struck, referring to the article of the Anglo-French Convention debiting France 3 s 4 d for each 30 grams of letters carried to France. Since the letter exceeded 15 grams of weight, the French debit amounted to 51 decimes (3x17 decimes), corresponding to 6 Astrian lire. The addresses was also charged the Austrian inland rate of 3 krCM for a letter weighing less than a Weiner Lot (17.5 grams) and a destination under 75 km distant from the Austro-Sardinian border. The only recorded letter from Victoria to Lombardy Venetia that carries Victorian postage stamps. Cert. R.P.S. (ex coll.Mentaschi).
