Description

BAHAMAS 1864 - 12 September 1864, single-rate letter from Nassau to Rome, prepaid 1s 4d to destination: 1d inland and 1s 3d credited to UK: 5d carriage to the U.K., 10d foreign transit. The letter was probably taken by a Cunard steamer to New York where it was put aboard the British packet Persia of the Cunard line on October 5. It arrived at Queenstown on 15 October. In London, the "PD" was applied confirming payment to destination. On 17 October it received the datestamp of the Travelling Post Office Calais-Paris. On the reverse there are the transit datesamp of Paris and the delivery datestamp of Rome. Only 3 letters recorded from the Bahamas to the Papal States in the period 1850-1870 (Ex. coll. Mentaschi).
