Description

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - April 1857, letter from Trinidad to Naples prepaid to destination: the 1 p. postage stamp (Yv. 4) short upside paid the domestic single rate (under 1/2 ounce) of Trinidad, 2s 2d was credited to UK for the double rate foreign transit (weight exceeding 1/4 ounce). The letter was carried to St. Thomas and placed on board the British packet Magdalena on April 15, arriving at Southampton on 1 May. It then continued to London and to France where the datestamp of the Travellling Post Office Calais-Paris was impressed on 2 Mai. The cover bears the British "PD" and the hardly legible oval "E/Franca" struck in Naples, which confirmed the prepayment of postage to destination. (ex. coll. Mentaschi).
