Description

REGNO D'ITALIA-ST. THOMAS 1864 - 13 June 1864, double-rate unpaid letter from St. Thomas, Danish Antilles, to Turin. The letter was handed to the British agent who embarked it on the RMSP packet Shannon to be disembarked at Southampton on 27 June. The accountancy marking "GB/1'60", debiting France 1.60 francs for each 30 grams of weight carried to France, was applied in London. The letter was then carried to France as per the datestamp of the Travelling Post Office Calais-Paris. On arrival in Turin the double rate of 20 decimi was reduced to 1.70 lire because the addressee enjoyed free domestic postage. (ex. coll. Mentaschi).
