Description

STATO PONTIFICIO-AUSTRALIA 1864 - February 1864, single -rate unpaid letter from Rome to Sydney. The letter, carried in the open mail trough France to London, bears the accountacy marking "FR/3F76C" struck in transit in Paris to debit the UK 3.76 francs for each ounce of letters coming from Papal States. The letter was charged 11d on delivery in London. The forwarder stuck a label with the final address on the cover and prepaid the postage of 6 d to destination. The letter was placed on board a Peninsular and Oriental Lines (P&O) packet in Southampton and disembarked in Alexandria. The was carried overland to Suez where it was put on board the P&O packet Bengal bound for Point de Galle where, on 25 March the letter was transferred to the P&O packet Bengal bound for Point de Galle where, on 25 March the letter was transferred to the P&O packet Madras which arrived in Sydney on 17 April 1864, the date of the delivery datestamp. (ex coll. Mentaschi).
